MOONLIGHT and LA LA LAND, two polar opposites rumored for Oscar nominations…

by Coop Cooper

These two films have received a fair amount of Academy Awards chatter. They are also both complete polar opposites of each other, yet both have the potential to receive a “Best Picture” nomination.

“Moonlight” – Running from bullies, Chiron (Alex R. Hibbert) – nicknamed ‘Little’ – hides in an abandoned crack house and is found by drug dealer Juan (Mahershala Ali) who feels sorry for him. Upon taking Little back home, Juan learns of Little’s harsh home life and feels compelled to look out for him. Little feels safe with Juan and his kind girlfriend Teresa (Janelle Monae) but can’t abide Juan’s dealing, knowing that his own mother is one of Juan’s clients. In his teenage years, Chiron (Ashton Sanders) as he is now called, knows he is different and possibly gay. With his mother’s drug use getting out of control and the constant bullying at school, Chiron feels isolated and conflicted. After a betrayal of trust ends in tragedy, Chiron’s life changes drastically. Years later, as an adult going by the alias ‘Black’ (Trevante Rhodes), Chiron finds himself living a lifestyle he once looked down upon until a call from home compels him to return home and face the demons from his past…

Top 10 movies of 2016 so far…

by Coop Cooper

My mid-year top 10 list is usually populated with the biggest genre films of the summer and a few wild cards from the beginning of the year. Expect this list to change drastically by the first of January when the rest of the indie films and studio prestige pictures for 2016 finally become available…

THE JUNGLE BOOK captures some of that old Disney magic…

by Coop Cooper

One of my first memories as a child is going to Disney World and seeing a special screening for children of the animated 1967 version of “The Jungle Book” at the hotel where we were staying. It was my first introduction to Rudyard Kipling’s classic story and I recalled loving every minute of it. Now Disney has released a live-action (mostly CGI to be accurate) update of “The Jungle Book” directed by John Favreau and I’m thrilled to report not only does this adaptation pay homage to Kipling’s story, but it also utilizes the songs and the adventurous tone of the classic Disney cartoon…

Coop’s next short film GOD MAKER has 6 more days left to fund!

Coop’s next short film GOD MAKER has 6 more days left to fund!

That’s right, I’m making another short film. At this second, we only have 6 days left on The Indiegogo campaign with only $900 out of $5000 left to go to shoot this one (filming in Dec. of 2012) in Clarksdale and Como, Mississippi.

This one is a blues music-themed horror film set in the Mississippi Delta. See that fetching actress in the teaser box? That’s Juliet Reeves, my lead actress and co-producer. Here’s a bit of the pitch…

Since I began filmmaking, I wanted to create a project that included some of the most outstanding aspects of Northwestern Mississippi where I grew up. I wanted it to include the culture, architecture, folklore and – most importantly – BLUES MUSIC.

Your contribution will help me, my actors and my crew to film my latest screenplay, “God Maker”. This film is my revisionist take on the Robert Johnson “sell your soul to the devil” legend. It will be our most ambitious film to date.

Check out our fundraising page for our teaser trailer and to help us spread the word!… Go here to see the GOD MAKER teaser and to contribute!

“Footloose” might be the best 80’s remake ever

“Footloose” might be the best 80’s remake ever

The current trend of remaking beloved films of past generations is often met with ire by both critics and movie goers alike. In spite of this vicious cycle, Memphian filmmaker Craig Brewer has accomplished a near impossible feat… He remade one of the most beloved pop movies from the 80’s and actually improved upon it. In short, “Footloose” (2011) is an amazingly entertaining film.

Teen orphan Ren McCormack (Kenny Wormald) moves from Boston to a small town in Georgia after his mother dies of cancer. His good-hearted uncle (Ray McKinnon) takes him in and makes him feel at home, but Ren soon runs afoul of a county ordinance that bans loud music and dancing…

Oh, DETHKLOK. You’ve done it again! Review of DETHALBUM II by DARK SIDE

Oh, DETHKLOK. You’ve done it again! Review of DETHALBUM II by DARK SIDE

Nope, it’s not movie news per se, BUT I’m trying to ease back into the horror scene after a long, pre-Halloween slumber. I’m kicking in the movie scene by reviewing Pandorum in the next day or two, but when a bunch of cartoon characters from “Adult Swim” can singlehandedly resurrect the flagging “death metal” scene, that’s news for the ages. Dethalbum II, by the fictional band Dethklok, hit iTunes last night at midnight and I downloaded it immediately. Why? Because Dethalbum I was so popular and completely owned the genre it satirizes…

THE MUD DOG BLUES movie shoot at Ground Zero Blues Club, by COOP

One very welcome side effect to blues music tourism in Clarksdale, Mississippi is that it attracts filmmakers to the area. Locals may have noticed an increasing amount of camera jockeys and boom mics wandering around downtown and the nearby tourist attractions. Get used to it, because if Tuesday night’s filming of “The Mud Dog Blues” feature promo trailer at Ground Zero Blues Club is any indication, Clarksdale may become one of the most filmed cities in the state.

REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA (2008) **?? movie review by COOP (& DARK SIDE?)

This movie sucks. It’s, more like a raging music video spectacle in the vein of “Rocky Horror.” Nope, that’s not a compliment. Adapted from a stage play, “Repo!” takes place in a not-so-distant future where organ failure has become a worldwide epidemic. GeneCo comes up with the medical technology to create new organs from scratch […]

AUSTRALIA (2008) ** movie review by COOP

Baz Luhrmann’s directorial debut, “Strictly Ballroom,” gave him success in his native Australia and a cult following in America. Later, he pushed boundaries with the stylized, modern version of “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet,” then surpassed them with the Academy Award winning “Moulin Rouge!” No doubt, fans and critics have been waiting for his grand […]

AUGUST RUSH (2007) *** ½ holiday movie review by COOP

One of the most satisfying feel-good movies of 2007, “August Rush” flew under the radar of most viewers and got no love from the critics last Thanksgiving. I’m going to blame all of that on mass cynicism and poor marketing because there is no reason this “happy tear-jerker” shouldn’t have been a hit. This modern […]

Morgan Freeman asks Coop a question at THE BEST DAY premiere! Video below…

My short film THE BEST DAY premiered in October 2011 at the Delta Cinema in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Little did I know I had a special guest in the audience who was about to ask me a question during the Q&A. Yep, I got a little flustered when I saw who it was.
