COMEDIVA: Gender-specific comedy site aims for world domination

By Coop Cooper

I don’t usually (read: never, and probably won’t again) cover web series or comedy sites on here, but sometimes you have to give props to talent.  America Young, an old friend of mine from Los Angeles (who is also a filmmaker, actress, voice over talent, stunt woman, film festival coordinator, toy dog enthusiast, etc…), pointed out the Comediva.com site out to me and suggested I take a look.  Since I contributed an article for Kat Hill and her Action Flick Chick website (click here to read my article “Why Manly-Men Love Action Flick Chicks“), I figure a good female comedy plug is in order…

OSCAR: MINE ARE WEENERS… A Hopeless Slackass’ Guide to Handicapping the Academy Awards by JAY

Tis’ the season to see folly.

It never fails. Every year about this time movie studios all along the San Andreas are clamoring to unload their homogenized, “release delayed”, unscreened, should’a-gone-straight-to-DVD dreck onto a movie going public so starved for any semblance of post-tryptophanian entertainment that it doesn’t seem to mind plopping down ten bucks a pop for the cinematic equivalent of a Zippy the Pinhead comic. B-movie sequels, RomCom bomb-athons and shameless hyperfad exploitationals clog our collective movie-going consciousness, leaving us longing for the unrivaled artistry and emotive tour de force of “Dracula vs. Billy the Kid”…

HAPPY PRANKSGIVING!!! from DARK SIDE…

While I eat me some delicious, delicious slaughtered turkey, I figured I’d remind my fellow clowns about the finer things in life. The things we are all thankful for. Like Muppets…

Oh, DETHKLOK. You’ve done it again! Review of DETHALBUM II by DARK SIDE

Nope, it’s not movie news per se, BUT I’m trying to ease back into the horror scene after a long, pre-Halloween slumber. I’m kicking in the movie scene by reviewing Pandorum in the next day or two, but when a bunch of cartoon characters from “Adult Swim” can singlehandedly resurrect the flagging “death metal” scene, that’s news for the ages. Dethalbum II, by the fictional band Dethklok, hit iTunes last night at midnight and I downloaded it immediately. Why? Because Dethalbum I was so popular and completely owned the genre it satirizes…

New MYSTERY TEAM short film will get you psyched for the movie release! by COOP

Ever since I saw the first trailer for MYSTERY TEAM, it’s been high on my must-see list. The idea of three Scooby-Doo, Hardy Boys wannabes still acting like their 10 while in high-school is funny enough, but throw them in to real-world crime and adult situations and you have a recipe for genius. For Comic-Con the “Derrick Comedy” group put together a short film titled “The Case of the Haunted Hotel” and it’s got some perfectly hilarious moments where innocence meets extremely uncomfortable situations…

MILESTONE!: THE SMALL TOWN CRITIC makes Adam West laugh! by COOP

Yeah, you heard me right. Yours truly wrote something that made the original Batman chuckle. Let me explain…

While on vacation in Los Angeles, I got some great news from the Action Flick Chick that I had won a bag full of ComicCon swag for a contest entry I had posted on her site. The contest: What would be the worst superhero power of all time? So for a larf, I typed out the first thing that came to my mind (cause Coop likes to make the Action Flick Chick laugh) and then set off for Los Angeles for the vaca…

OH NO YOU DIDN’T #5!… CHEECH & CHONG have remade TRON! No, I’m not kidding. by COOP

Got the heads up on this one from the fellas over at C.H.U.D.

This is nuttier than a fruitcake or a burlap sack full of squirrels.

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong have entertained us with their pot-fueled antics since 1978’s “Up in Smoke.” It’s hard to believe the two have kept their schtick (and their liver/brains) alive since then. Now they’ve done something I’m not sure what to make of…

OH NO YOU DIDN’T #3: Someone who has never seen a STAR WARS movie tries to explain it! by COOP **UPDATED!**

I declare this one a must-see. Some dude named Joe Nicolosi apparently asked an air-headed friend (girlfriend, maybe) Amanda to explain the original “Star Wars” trilogy even though she has NEVER SEEN any of the films. Correction: She’s seen bits and pieces and knows the characters’ names, but Joe tapes the entire explanation and adds animation for comedic effect. The result: A hilarious work of genius…

“Bard None: A Cinematic Guide to Really Bad Shakespeare” by JAY

Terrence Howard is Macbeth. That’s not a typo. The “Hustle and Flow” star recently announced plans to not only bring the seminal Shakespearean tragedy to the big screen but to set it in the Caribbean confines of Puerto Rico and cast himself in the title role. No start date has as yet been set for “Macbeth, Mon” but I’ll wager it’ll be a favorite of the Sundance set come 2010. Oh, and Eddie Murphy has decided to reinvent the wheel by taking “Romeo and Juliet” and shifting the focus of the story to Mom and Pop Montague and Capulet; thereby turning the treasured tale of unrequited love into “Meeteth the Fockers”…

GROUND ZERO: Helping to plan your escape from the apocolypse. by DARK SIDE

In the spirit of trying to keep a slow news week from making the site boring, here’s one for all you fans of nuclear disaster movies. It’s also a bonus because “Watchmen” (which premiere’s on Friday) has an apocalyptic element to its story. See? I made it relevant. Powered by Google Maps, Ground Zero (not […]

Make a movie with Uwe Boll! by DARK SIDE

Dark Horizons reports that universally hated German director, Uwe (pronounced “Oo-vuh”) Boll is offering co-producing credits on his next movie to anyone who sends him $49 smackeroos. Basically, he’s wants us internet schlubs to finance his next movie. Hold on there, Cletus. Before you pull out your wallet, remember that Boll is the guy who […]

THE DARK SIDE CRITIC sez: “STOPS COPIES ME!”

You’re gonna have to forgive the self-indulgent post here, but this has been cracking me up all day. My love for “Metalocalypse” is no big secret but sometimes when an episode strikes me as hilarious, I can’t stop laughing for days. Take the episode “Dethcarraldo,” in which the band, Dethklok, hears about a drug called […]

HAPPY HOLIDAYS from THE DARK SIDE CRITIC…

Hehehehehehe, this commercial warms my blood. Nothing says Merry Christmas like Darth Vader and Freddy Krueger in a holidays Direct TV ad. Only in a non-English-speaking country could you get away with this level of yuletide wrongness. If they had thrown Ronald McDonald in and you’d have kids screaming and spilling hot cocoa on each […]

I’ve been saying it all along… Romantic Comedies are screwing up our love lives! by COOP

Looks like some eggheads at a university in Edinburgh (Heriot Watt University to be precise) have confirmed something I’ve hypothesised for years… Romantic Comedies, A.K.A. “Rom-Coms,” while highly entertaining, give people unrealistic expectations about love and relationships. Read the article here. My two cents? Look at it this way: The writers that create these stories […]

Russia remakes COMMANDO! by COOP

I can’t tell if this is supposed to be a spoof or what. Some scenes look shot-for-shot identical while others appear completely off the wall. The original “Commando” is a childhood staple of mine. It boosted Arnold Schwarzenegger’s star power and set a new standard for 80’s action carnage. I’d like to know the “why?” […]

My short film THE BEST DAY premiered in October 2011 at the Delta Cinema in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Little did I know I had a special guest in the audience who was about to ask me a question during the Q&A. Yep, I got a little flustered when I saw who it was.
