BABY DRIVER, best movie of the year so far?…

“Baby Driver” (Now in theaters) – Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a savant genius at driving cars. Orphaned at a young age, he boosted the car of the dangerous gangster, Doc (Kevin Spacey), who recognized his special talent. Now Baby is Doc’s top getaway driver, although his talents and strangeness causes distrust and resentment from his fellow criminals. However, unlike his colleagues, Baby has a deaf foster father (CJ Jones) and a new girlfriend (Lily James) to worry about. Nearly done paying his debt to Doc, Baby has plans to get out, but an unstable, trigger-happy bank robber named Bats (Jamie Foxx) could put everybody Baby cares about in danger.

“Baby Driver” might seem like an innocuous title, but it succeeds in movie magic. Nearly every scene, whether it is a car chase, or a guy walking down the street, is as stylishly choreographed as a broadway musical. Speaking of music, the soundtrack plays a very large part in the film since Baby constantly listens to music on his iPod to drown out the constant tinnitus from the car wreck that claimed his parents. Director Edgar Wright always has a stylistic, pop-culture, musical approach to his films and “Baby Driver” is no exception. It also has wonderful performances, excellent writing and tight plotting. It is rarely predictable, very satisfying and Ansel Elgort is quite a find as a potential future star.

“Baby Driver” will become a cult classic, if not the sleeper hit of the year. Already, it’s my favorite film of the year and I hope it attracts enough fans and word-of-mouth to gain the attention of the Academy. Be sure to catch it while it is still in theaters as it is a near-perfect cinematic experience.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Morgan Freeman asks Coop a question at THE BEST DAY premiere! Video below…

My short film THE BEST DAY premiered in October 2011 at the Delta Cinema in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Little did I know I had a special guest in the audience who was about to ask me a question during the Q&A. Yep, I got a little flustered when I saw who it was.
