The Secret Lives of Stunt Women by COOP

Coop here reporting from Los Angeles. While I’m in town, I thought I’d find some interesting film industry folks to learn more about what they do. Luckily, I stumbled upon some old friends who enlightened me to a part of the business I knew very little about.

Of all the individuals in film, few are as mysterious and unique as those who do stunt work. Not only do these artists employ acting skills, they also harness fierce athletic abilities to achieve seemingly impossible (or painful-looking feats). Those who perform stunts form a very tight circle in the business; and in the case of women, one of the tightest circles in the entire industry…

MILESTONE!: THE SMALL TOWN CRITIC makes Adam West laugh! by COOP

Yeah, you heard me right. Yours truly wrote something that made the original Batman chuckle. Let me explain…

While on vacation in Los Angeles, I got some great news from the Action Flick Chick that I had won a bag full of ComicCon swag for a contest entry I had posted on her site. The contest: What would be the worst superhero power of all time? So for a larf, I typed out the first thing that came to my mind (cause Coop likes to make the Action Flick Chick laugh) and then set off for Los Angeles for the vaca…

TRON LEGACY teaser trailer made me weak in the knees… by COOP

Not since The Empire Strikes Back have I anticipated a movie so eagerly. Tron was one of the biggest cinematic staples of my childhood. I can’t imagine a world without it. Finally, we are about to get a sequel. Tron Legacy (formerly Tron 2.0 and TR2N) has been a twinkle on the horizon for many years now. Four years ago or so, Jeff Bridges did an interview wearing his old Flynn helmet which sparked speculation that something was on stove. Rumors emerged…

HAIR METAL MOVIE MADNESS #6: Need inspiration to get in shape? VISION QUEST has it! by COOP

Sports movies reached a pinnacle in the 80’s with many shining examples of how underdogs can triumph through sportsmanship, hard work and the desire to “win or die in the attempt” (something my old football coached turned into the acronym “W.O.D.I.T.A.”). Vision Quest (1985) is the best of these films. Matthew Modine plays Louden Swain, a smart and precocious beanpole who suddenly decides to give his high school career meaning by performing a near impossible feat…

What Most People Don’t Know About Movie Piracy by COOP

Posted on July 24th, 2009

Elementary school kids and soccer moms have illegally downloaded free music for nearly a decade, but with that problem coming under control thanks to iTunes, the focus has now shifted to movies. People buy bootleg DVDs on street corners from Hollywood to Singapore. Chances are someone in Antarctica is streaming a hot download of the new “Harry Potter” movie as we speak. Movie piracy has hit an all-time high as studios desperately try to develop new strategies and technologies to combat it. With the Motion Picture Association of America claiming a 2.3 billion dollar loss from piracy in 2005 alone, perhaps it’s time for the casual movie buccaneer to become informed about his/her impact on this popular industry…

Neo the ninja! The creators of THE MATRIX return with a NINJA ASSASSIN trailer! by COOP

Meh? First of all, this MTV exclusive trailer is of very poor quality. You can’t tell what’s going on half the time. What’s really disturbing is even though you can’t make out much, you can still see how crappy the CGI throwing stars and digital blood look. Then you have ninjas with machine guns and rocket launchers, mystical Shinobi magic, a ninja getting run over by a car… What is all this junk?…

Why wait for a live-action GL movie? COOP reviews GREEN LANTERN: FIRST FLIGHT

Posted on July 22nd, 2009

It’s an origin story, yet test pilot Hal Jordan becomes Green Lantern by the 3 min 30 sec mark. Despite the hasty introduction, this animated, direct to DVD Green Lantern movie contains a lot of what fans have been waiting for. Massive outer space battles, grumpy Kilowog, a non-wimpy Sinestro, giant green flyswatters. Surely a live-action version couldn’t support the FX that First Flight boasts, and… What? Yes, I said giant green flyswatters. Yeah, that pisses me off too.

I’ve always hated Scooby Doo. Even when I was a kid I watched it and I just didn’t get it. Four nitwits and a talking dog against corrupt real estate scam artists (but no real monsters) really bugged the hell out of me. When the Venture Bros. made fun of Scooby Doo by turning the characters into deranged, over the hill degenerates, I couldn’t have been more amused. It appears the creators behind Mystery Team aim to accomplish a similar feat by taking a Hardy Boys-like team of youthful sleuths, letting them grow into adulthood and having them take on a adult-level caper with all of the vile, lurid elements that go along with real-life crime.

Ever finish a movie thinking “What the hell was that?” only to have it slowly eat at you the rest of the day? What if after an entire weekend, you couldn’t shake that feeling. That’s only happened to me twice this year. The first happened after watching the outstanding French horror film Martyrs. The second after watching the short film Heart of Karl

“It’s a wraith, man! An evil spirit and it ain’t cool!” -Clint Howard The Wraith (1986)

Such a quote from Clint Howard back in the 80’s might suggest a horror movie, but The Wraith is actually one of the most underrated sci-fi action movies of the decade. Why is it sci-fi instead of horror? Because the killer is a good guy and he looks like Robocop. That’s why. Oddly enough, it’s a remake of Clint Eastwood’s 1973 faux-Spaghetti Western/ghost tale High Plains Drifter. Like Drifter, The Wraith tells the story of a guy…

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE (2009) **** movie review by COOP

Posted on July 16th, 2009

The penultimate book in the series, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” marks the largest turning point in the franchise. The teen wizards have suffered tragedy and triumph in their battle against the Dark Lord Voldemort and his minions. Now they must grow up quickly as their situation becomes grim at Hogwort’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This film more than captures the tone and gravity of the book, even if it does leave out some crucial details…

Got the heads up on this one from the fellas over at C.H.U.D.

This is nuttier than a fruitcake or a burlap sack full of squirrels.

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong have entertained us with their pot-fueled antics since 1978’s “Up in Smoke.” It’s hard to believe the two have kept their schtick (and their liver/brains) alive since then. Now they’ve done something I’m not sure what to make of…

Has DARK SIDE become jaded about JENNIFER’S BODY? The answer is “Yes” in today’s installment of I AM A HATER!

Posted on July 14th, 2009

Yesterday a female friend of mine asked me if I’d seen the Jennifer’s Body trailer yet. I said, sure I have… I keep up with those things you know. She then asked why I hadn’t posted anything about it on the website. I responded that I didn’t find it particularly interesting.

Her jaw hit the floor.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the project, it involves Megan Fox as a shallow high school cheerleader named Jennifer who somehow becomes possessed…

While cruising the Ain’t It Cool News website, I came across the trailer for a new NZ film starring Sam Neill titled “Under the Mountain.” Supposedly it’s a very famous tale that all Kiwi kids grew up with, but how they heck would I know anything about it? Probably another generic kiddie fantasy like “The Last Mimzy” or something lame like that, but I figured but I checked it out anyway… SHOCK!!! I know this story and it’s pretty freakin’ awesome!…

Deadpool/Hannibal King is Green Lantern… Ryan Reynolds is in! by COOP

After a redonkulous amount of speculation and BS concerning who would wear the super-power ring of the Green Lantern Corps, a winner has emerged. Ryan Reynolds who has played two minor superheroes in Blade 3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine has been called up to the big leagues. After beating out Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake, Sam Worthington, Jack Black and Larry the Cable Guy, Reynolds finally gets a D.C. Comics staple to launch a franchise…

HAIR METAL MOVIE MADNESS (Special edition!) #4: Pee Wee and Dee Snider BURN IN HELL… by DARK SIDE

For shame, I never saw “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” in the theater. I ended up seeing it on VHS at summer camp after all the other campers endorsed it with one word… “Awesome.” At the time, “awesome” was a step above “radical,” “gnarly” and “wicked.” When that counselor with the creepy lazy eye put that tape in, I knew I was in for something special. One Large Marge and an Amazing Larry later, I knew I was destined to see this one again and again…

DISTRICT 9: New trailer reveals it’s way bigger than anyone expected! **UPDATED** by COOP

**UPDATE** call 1-866-666-6001 to leave a crank call to Sony Pictures about alien District 9 escapees and they might use your voice in their marketing campaign OR… possibly the movie???

I no longer worry about the fact that “District 9” is essentially a remake of “Alien Nation.” Not after seeing this new trailer that proves this film aspires to be more than just a faux documentary about desperate aliens trying to adjust to harsh conditions on Earth. As you will see from the trailer, this is a big-budgeted sci-fi action film. There’s definitely more to it then just a thinly-veiled allegory about the South African Apartheid…

CTHULHU (H.P. Lovecraft) and DOLAN’S CADILLAC (Stephen King)… two movie properties that brushed with greatness! by DARK SIDE

Posted on July 8th, 2009

Some literary properties, no mater how great, are near impossible to adapt. Some of these properties are so greatly loved that some filmmakers feel the need to at least give it the old college try. These two films didn’t quite rise to the occasion, but they had the potential to reach the same status of ultra-greatness as their source materials. Both are worth a look for fans of the works that inspired them…

I AM A HATER presents: Syfy Channel? SYFY CHANNEL??? NBC/Universal… you, sirs, have crossed the line! by COOP

So I turn on the tube today and as I strolled through the Direct TV channels, I noticed that the “Sci-fi” channel has been changed to the “Syfy” channel. The new tagline: “Imagine Greater.”

Nuts.

Now, I knew this was coming. When I first heard about it I just kinda went “Pttthhhhfff!!!” and shook my head in annoyance, but nothing prepared me for the rage I felt when I actually saw the logo newly displayed on the screen. Big deal, you say? BIG DEAL??? You’ve got a lot of nerve, mister. Some of you may not understand the greater picture to this problem so I feel it’s my duty to inform you… The problem here is threefold:
