COOL TRAILER ROUNDUP… SHUTTER ISLAND! DAYBREAKERS! THE CRYPT! CARRIERS! by DARK SIDE
A couple of these trailers are a few weeks old, but chances are you haven’t seen them. These snuck in like a ninja goin’ behind enemy lines to rescue his army buddies from the Vietcong. Very mysterious that I haven’t heard of these until they were upon me… especially considering one is a Scorsese film.

SHUTTER ISLAND. This looks like Scorsese’s first venture into horror, or at least psychological thriller since his overrated remake of “Cape Fear.” Speaking of overrated, I hate DiCaprio. There I said it. He’s wimpy, whiny and still looks like he’s 13, making him unsuitable for most of the roles he scores. I rejoiced the day he turned down “American Psycho” (how big of a disaster would that have been?). I look forward to see him squirming in an evil psych ward on a distant island, especially with Scorsese pulling the strings. Check out this tense and creepy trailer for “Shutter Island.” Scorsese’s hit or miss with me. Fingers crossed for this one…

DAYBREAKERS. Sooooo tired of vampires. Especially the stereotypical movie vampire whose mythology was culled and distorted so ridiculously far from its origins that with each film the legend becomes more and more watered down. I make allowances for originality. “Daybreakers” makes use of an inevitable snafu that most vampire films dismiss… What if highly infectious vampires started outnumbering the humans? Simple, yet it’s never been covered (as far as I can remember). This leads to a quandary in which vampires must farm humans in order to survive, but the math doesn’t add up. Soon the humans will become extinct and the vampires will mutate into mindless monsters without fresh blood. Possibilities, no?…

THE CRYPT. This one already came out on June 25th with a limited run. I love the title, the concept and the tone of this film. It feels like a film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s creepy short story, “The Statement of Randolph Carter” in which a foolish explorer takes a portable phone into an ancient crypt and then describes to his partner the horrors he witnesses. Instead of a dude with a phone, “The Crypt” has a bunch of adventurous chicks (like in “The Descent”) going a-grave robbin’ inside a cursed necropolis. It’s got a wicked Lucio Fulci feel to it and I look forward to its mixture of claustrophobia and old school, ’70’s ghoul action…

CARRIERS. A no-nonsense, straight-up realistic version of “The Stand” with a very small cast. The avian flu goes worldwide, highly virulent and more deadly than before. A few college-age survivors go on the run, taking drastic steps to isolate themselves from others as they race towards a virus-free zone. Of course, things don’t go as planned when they run into a father desperate to save his infected daughter. Looks ultra-creepy and stars Chris (Captain Kirk) Pine, Christopher (Det. Stabler SVU) and Piper (used to be Coyote Ugly) Perabo. Keep them nasty birds away from me!…

I’ll be seeing YOU, in The Crypt!
