HAIR METAL MOVIE MADNESS! #1 (every Saturday!) by DARK SIDE

Many of us grew up in the 80’s watching the movies and listening to music. One song from that era can bring back so many great memories. Sometimes… songs remind us of movies (or vice-versa). HAIR METAL MOVIE MADNESS brings back those memories by connecting the songs we loved from the 80’s to the movie(s) they were attached to. Visit The Small Town Critic every Saturday to rock out with us to the songs and movies that shaped a generation…
Dark Side here. I’m going to start out this series with a song/movie combo near and dear to my heart. You see, when I was a young little clown, I was a ‘fraidy cat and a sci-fi nerd. DON’T LAUGH. You know you were too. I had not seen an R-rated horror movie all the way through until I was 13 because, frankly, I was too scared.

When I was 7 and flipping through the channels one day I accidentally saw a camp counselor cut off Jason’s mother’s head in the original “Friday the 13th” and it scarred me for life. I thought all horror movies showed were nonstop slo-mo decapitations which kept me away from them until 1987 when a friend (Sebastian) talked me into watching “Witchboard” starring Tawny Kitian. Not only did I love it, the movie emboldened me because I finally realized my fertile imagination easily conjured up scarier things than the actual horror movie could dish out.

High off the rush of this discovery, “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors” was showing next so I made the night a double-header. A great choice because today it still remains one of my favorite horror movies of the 80’s. Freddy vs. a team of teen superhero dream warriors led by Patricia Arquette… How can a young Dark Side resist that? But the BEST part was that I was starting to get into hair metal and low and behold, guess who played the theme song, “Dream Warriors”…

Horror + hair metal. It was like peanut butter and chocolate. I was immediately hooked and the rest is history. I must’ve seen this video on MTV 100 times (way back when they still showed videos). It was created during that magical time when bands would integrate the movie into their videos. Sneaky marketing but cool none the less.
Prepare to rock out to “Dream Warriors” by Dokken, featuring Patricia Arquette and a special guest star (hint, hint). HAIR METAL MOVIE MADNESS begins NOW!…

My favorite part is when George Lynch busts through the wall for his guitar solo.

Even better when Freddy grabs him and pulls his ass back into the wall. End solo.

But the most badass part of it…is George Lynch’s skeletal guitar!!!
