COOL TRAILER ROUNDUP… SHUTTER ISLAND! DAYBREAKERS! THE CRYPT! CARRIERS! by DARK SIDE

Posted on June 30th, 2009

A couple of these trailers are a few weeks old, but chances are you haven’t seen them. These snuck in like a ninja goin’ behind enemy lines to rescue his army buddies from the Vietcong. Very mysterious that I haven’t heard of these until they were upon me… especially considering one is a Scorsese film…

OSCAR CHANGES: 10 nominees instead of 5? No Best Songs? No Testimonial awards? by COOP

Posted on June 29th, 2009

There’s a-doin’s a-transpirin’ over at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The first announcement came that they would be nominating 10 films instead of the traditional 5 for Best Picture in Feb. 2010. I like this idea. Think about what it means, not only for the films, but for the Academy as well. It will give some much-deserved exposure to those films that were ‘on the bubble.’ Many of those films were worthy of nomination in the top 5 anyway, but weren’t for some reason or another. Nominating wild cards will (hopefully) make the event…

HAIR METAL MOVIE MADNESS! #2 (every Saturday!) COOP feels the need for speed!!!

Posted on June 27th, 2009

Ah, the summer of ’86.

I remember very clearly choosing to go see “Short Circuit” over “Top Gun” on opening weekend. In hindsight, that’s ridiculous but it happened. About a month later I finally saw Tom Cruise blow up Russians in his F-14 Tomcat and it blew me away. Even better was how entranced everyone was with the soundtrack. It was one of those tapes where every song was listenable (at the time) and people played it…

TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN (2009) *1/2 movie review by COOP

Posted on June 26th, 2009

Films featuring giant fighting robots are never intended as high art. Designated as summer blockbusters, these big-budgeted crowd pleasers emphasize huge explosions, excellent special effects, big actors and PG to PG-13 ratings… something the whole family can enjoy, right? But what happens when a directing/producing team is so out of touch with the real world that they throw good sense to the wind and let inappropriate, even downright offensive elements creep into what was supposed to be a decent film for both kids and adults? You get…

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 (2009) ** movie review by guest critic, AUDIE

Posted on June 25th, 2009

My buddy, Audie (who by the way is also a world-class blues harmonica player), graciously sent us an extremely intellectual and well-written review of Tony Scott’s latest. I don’t know about you, but I like the cut of his jib… Man, does this movie have a bad plot. I should clarify that. The latter half of the movie, when Ryder’s (John Travolta) supreme hijacking plan is revealed in its entirety and all the pieces of the puzzle are put together, the final product is so illogical that one can’t helping thinking the puzzle was…

OH NO YOU DIDN’T #4: McConaughey + Gary Oldman playing his dwarf twin brother! TIPTOES review by COOP

Posted on June 24th, 2009

This movie came out in 2003. I think we all missed it because it went direct to DVD with zero publicity and as you can guess, there’s a good reason why. It’s a wannabe politically correct comedy disguised as an very un-PC comedy that comes across as so mean-spirited that it fails both comedically and dramatically. Wow. Trainwreck doesn’t even begin to describe this fascinating oddity of a film…

Move over Japan, those crazy Siamese are moving in on your horror territory! by DARK SIDE

Posted on June 23rd, 2009

Yes, I know they are called “Thai” now, but Siamese had such a great ring to it in the title. No offense intended. Now that I got any potential angry comments out of the way, I’ve said many times before that the French corner the market in good horror at present. Thailand is looking to dethrone them and although they are not as polished, I’d say they have a chance to do it if they play their cards right. Why Thailand, you ask? Why not, says I? How dare you. It is true that…

Wacky fun! That’s the best way to describe the new INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS trailer. by COOP

Tarantino’s lost his mind. Actually… did he ever really have it? I tell you what he does have. Guts. “Inglourious Basterds” looks so wild and zany I can easily imagine it being a disaster.

But I know Quentin better than that. While always self indulgent it looks like he’s gotten the foot-fetishism porn film that was “Death Proof” out of his system and is now back to the same mixture of cheese and coolness that spawned “Kill Bill.” The first trailer for “Basterds” did nothing for me because it didn’t give me enough flavor for the tone of the film. In this new one, I see…

MISSISSIPPI MOVIES: How Modern Hollywood Perceives the South by COOP

MISSISSIPPI MOVIES: How Modern Hollywood Perceives the South by COOP

Posted on June 19th, 2009

I once had a roommate/friend in college who flat-out refused to come to visit me and my family in Mississippi. He thought the south had such a bad reputation that he was bound to experience something so offensive to his beliefs that he would not be able to keep a civil tongue. We were in Dallas, Texas, at the time, mind you. I suddenly became self conscious when I learned that people from parts of Texas or even other parts of the South regarded Mississippi as backwards, unfriendly to outsiders, racist and dangerous. Was my home state that bad? Sure, history played a part in the…

Whatever, here’s a 10 minute clip of the long-delayed anthology Halloween movie “Trick ‘r Treat” just in time for summer (say what?). Apparently it will receive a possible limited theatrical run then go straight to DVD and Blu Ray in time for the Season of the Witch. Such a shame because…

PRECIOUS trailer will make you cry all by itself. by COOP

Okay, all you tough guys out there. Try to hold it together for this one. I wasn’t prepared when I took a peek at the trailer for “Precious” (formerly known as “Push” but the name change ensure’s it’s not confused with the sci-fi film “Push” released earlier this year). Sounded like another urban drama about how tough life is out on the streets. After viewing the trailer I now understand the early Oscar buzz already surrounding the title. Wait, is that Mariah Carey in the trailer??? Yes it is…

You have to be prepared for when a zombie outbreak occurs in your own small town. The zombies have to be nipped in the bud (or head) before it takes over the whole world and it is up to you to do it. THE HANGOVER (2009) ***1/2 movie review by COOP

Posted on June 12th, 2009

Here’s a no-brainer concept. A party-animal teacher (Bradley Cooper) and a henpecked dentist (Ed Helms) take their soon-to-be-married buddy (Justin Bartha) on a bachelor party romp for one night in Vegas with the bride’s weird brother (Zack Galifianakis) in tow. After a round of Jägermeister shots, the group blacks out. They awaken to find their villa trashed, a Bengal tiger in the bathroom, a crying baby in the closet and the bridegroom missing. With the wedding in Los Angeles fast approaching, the trio must…

OH NO YOU DIDN’T #3: Someone who has never seen a STAR WARS movie tries to explain it! by COOP **UPDATED!**

I declare this one a must-see. Some dude named Joe Nicolosi apparently asked an air-headed friend (girlfriend, maybe) Amanda to explain the original “Star Wars” trilogy even though she has NEVER SEEN any of the films. Correction: She’s seen bits and pieces and knows the characters’ names, but Joe tapes the entire explanation and adds animation for comedic effect. The result: A hilarious work of genius…

Movies don’t try to please everyone. Tailor-made for certain demographics, some filmmakers try to entertain or provoke discussion, knowing full well their movie will offend a particular group. The most inflammatory of these movies attempt to question taboos, rituals and customs of many of the world’s most popular religions…
