David Lynch is back and badder than ever! Well, not “badder” actually. Not sure what I mean by that. by COOP

Finally we get to see what David Lynch has been up to since the bafflingly boring “Inland Empire.” Despite the failure of “Empire” (I’m gonna play naïve and blame it all on his going ape with a digital camera that he wasn’t used to working with), most of his films are considered…

BATTLE FOR TERRA 3-D (2009) ***1/2 movie review by COOP

Posted on May 5th, 2009

Formerly titled “Terra,” this 3-D animated film hasn’t gotten a lot of press or as big of a release as I would have expected. It’s independent and lower-budgeted than those movies produced by Pixar and Dreamworks, but don’t let that fool you. “Battle for Terra” packs an emotional punch with a solid, sci-fi morality tale usually reserved for a more mature vehicle. Alas, the cheapness shows and the film suffers a bit, but that should in no way discourage…

G-G-G-GHOSTS!!!! JU-ON (THE GRUDGE) videogame looks scarier than the movies! by DARK SIDE

Posted on May 4th, 2009

It’s a shame that people have gotten so down on the “Ju-on” series of films and remakes. Strike that, I mean the first one. Umm… actually I have no idea which one I saw. Believe it or not there are eight films in this franchise. Apparently the first two films were remade in Japan first, then remade again for American audiences (I seemed to have missed one in there, but I digress). My point is that whichever Japanese version I actually saw was one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. Flash forward to present day…

SKELLIG (2009) DVD review by guest reviewer THE SKYKID

Posted on May 4th, 2009

Coop here. I’m pleased to have SkyKid from SkyKid.com as a guest reviewer. SkyKid specializes in ‘coming of age’ films (a very cool niche!) and is overseas so he has access to a lot of interesting films that folks in “Region 1” don’t hear much about. So, without further ado, here’s SkyKid!…

If it was not for a friend of mine who showed me the “Skellig” cover I would never knew that the film existed. But a single glimpse of it – and I was determined to see it – as Bill Milner (who we all remember from “Son of Rambow”) is starring in it and the tag line “A magical story of an unlikely friendship” seemed pretty intriguing…

EVIL DEAD 2 is now featured on Turner Classic Movies… What does this say about the current state of horror? by DARK SIDE

You couldn’t get this movie for money or love on VHS between 1987 and the early 1990’s. If you caught it on late night cable, you got lucky. I went through serious moolah at SunCoast to get it. Seriously, I paid $30 for a tape of it just so I could VIEW IT FOR THE FIRST TIME. Now it’s considered a “Turner’s Classic.” Here’s what I believe this means for horror…

MARTYRS… The most brutal horror film of all time? DARK SIDE is about to watch it!

I’ve been waiting to see this one for months. If you’ve been reading my articles, you know how nuts I am over French horror films right now. “Inside” (À l’intérieur) has quickly become one of my favorite horror movies of all time. “Frontiere(s)” was pretty wicked too and I really liked “Them” even more so once I learned “The Strangers” blatently ripped it off. “Martyrs” is the newest French horror film which released on DVD this week. It’s creator has been tapped to help the “Hellraiser” remake based on the strength of “Martyrs” if that tells you anything. No one will really tell me…
