The real crime here is not the silly plot holes or the fact that characters and motivations make no sense. (Spock's--Spock v1.0, that is--explanation of Nero's motivations and his personal involvement in the tragedy was so nonsensical that as I watched the movie in the theatre I thought that we the audience were meant to take it that he was LYING.) The real crime is the multiple times that the movie overreaches for emotional significance (for example, imploding/blowing up Vulcan BATTLESTAR GALACTICA style (that would be the original, cheesy BG, in case you're wondering) while completely BLOWING multiple beautiful opportunities to CONNECT THE AUDIENCE TO THE JEOPARDY and BRING THE EMOTIONS HOME TO THE AUDIENCE.

Cracked recently put up a post about how silly it was to gloss over the reaction of the cadets on Enterprise to seeing all of their classmates casually killed by Nero. Of course, they're about the get blown out of the sky next, but there ought to have been some reaction worked in there. Sloppy. But more egregiously, STAR TREK missed a chance to rip off a much better movie, INDEPENDENCE DAY (yes, it pains me to call that bit of fluffy cheese a better movie than a Trek movie, but it's true) by showing the people of Earth menaced by Nero. Sure, we don't care about Vulcan except through Spock, but we all live on Earth--come on! Do you think the audience sees Earth in STAR TREK as "sci-fi Earth" and hence foreign and non-relateable? No, of course not. It comes off as lazy and cheap. As in "We were too cheap to show reaction shots of people around the Earth, so we give you all the B-list Academy cadets who weren't given berths on the defense fleet. You're welcome." I don't know about you, but even as a big Trek nerd I couldn't care less about Star Fleet Academy or the cadets, other than the principles. Why would non-fans connect to that? Please.

Also, the Golden Gate bridge should have buckled and fallen into the Bay when Nero plunked that drill down next to it. Now THAT would have been a fun visual. Again, INDEPENDENCE DAY did it and did it better. Why is the GGB off-limits but we can blow up all of Vulcan? And why should I care?

At one point Spock claims there are only 10K Vulcans left... okay, so they have no colonies. Yaright. At another point, they refer to 6 billion Vulcans. IOW, Vulcan has the population of Earth today. Aside from the implausibility of that, as Vulcan, unlike Earth, is not exactly resource-rich, it's a dumb attempt to connect with the audience. YET AGAIN, when you could bring it right home to the audience when Nero attacks Earth... they fail. Oopsie.

Eh... I mean, people lined up to see those Wars prequels and boy was that some disappointing cinema. UNtertainment. Star Trek was fun. It just worries me that while Abrams did have good instincts about SOME things, he missed such obvious, easy, logical, sell-outy-goodness moments to pander to the audience. Earth to Abrams, we love to be pandered to! But not in a way that makes us think we're racists. (Like that vomit-inducing "caring American tourists" scene from SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. We like to be talked down until we catch on that we're being talked down to... TOO OBVS, SILLY FILMMAKER.)

Btw, speaking of racists, notice how most of the Vulcans just drip condescension to Spock but nobody but McCoy among the humans ever says anything abusive to him (and only to needlessly reference TOS, not because it makes any sense within the logic of the movie)? (Kirk's tirade doesn't count--unlike, say, the TOS Kirk's racist rant in "This Side of Paradise", NuKirk is just engaging in bog-standard reverse psychology.) Having the humans be meanies too would make the audience feel bad about themselves, definitely a no-no. I like this, though, because it was about time that Spock left that tragic mulatto trope behind. That shit was soooo last century.

Alright, Cooper...while I agree with some of your 'nitpicking', I think there's a little too much ripping going on. I've heard the line about this one deviating too much from the other movies and such, BUT...I don't see it that way. Putting myself in the 'Trekkie' mindset...J.J. didn't change history, the ROMULANS changed history! I thought this was a terrific way to open up a whole new direction for Star Trek! If you've followed some of J.J.'s other creations (LOST, Fringe), which I'm sure you have, you'll notice that he's deeply into the ideas of time travel & alternate realities. Well, for me, this one showed how the Romulans time traveling adventure changed the reality as we knew it...just as one example, putting Spock in the limelight instead of Kirk (Spock owned this movie!). But like all J.J. shows, particuarly LOST, no matter how much rearranging of the past/present/future is done, destiny still brings the same people together...thus the same Enterprise crew that would have come together if circumstances hadn't change, remain the same. And backing up a little bit, just when everything seemed to be spinning outta control, the elder Spock puts Kirk (and us!) back on the path...although, I could have done without the giant CG creatures on the ice planet (liked the dog/wolf creature, but the other was a bit much). Yeah, it was a bit convenient for Spock to do that, but...I think it works. Anyway, as you can see, I'm a HUGE J.J. fan...and I'm not sure anyone else could have successfully pulled it off without such vision. But back to Star Trek...my honest opinion is that after it's all said & done, this will be the best action/sci-fi film of the year...YES, better than Terminator Salvation (which I just saw), and 'easily' better than the soon to be released Transformers 2 (can you believe I just said that?!). And I'll wrap this up by saying, I better see Klingons in the next movie!

That's funny cause the more I started writing about it the more I found things to nitpick. Like Tim Burton's "Sweeny Todd," I'm going to have to put some distance between this one and myself so I can let the things I don't like go and see it fresh. The upside is that I love "Sweeny Todd" now and I have a feeling the same thing will happen with this one.

Great review! Nice objective approach. I have to say though, after mulling it over a bit, that this is one of my favorite Star Treks ever. It reinvents everything that Trek has ever had going for it in a manner that doesn't just not insult old fans, but honors them.
Also, I have to say, William Shatner will always be Kirk, but Christopher Pine really made a mark in my book. I look foward to the future of this franchise.
