ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL (2008) ****1/2… finally gets a release date! by COOP

I’m very happy to hear this. I saw “Anvil!” back in June 2008 and thus ensued one of the most fun movie-going experiences I’ve ever had (go here to read my ANVIL! review). Like a documentary/mini-concert hybrid, the film tells the story of a band who influenced 99% of the heavy metal and thrash bands out there, only to lapse into total obscurity years later.
All that time, the band has been making album after album, hoping for their music to catch on again so they can be the rock stars they always aspired to be. It’s an inspiring, heartbreaking and often hilarious story about two guys who just won’t give up, no matter how bad things get. After the documentary ended, the band rushed out on stage (with “Anthrax” guitarist, Scott Ian in tow) and exploded the collective eardrums of the audience while playing their most famous tunes. If it sounds like a blast, it is. Literally.
The doc opens in LA and NY theaters (sans the post film mini concert) on April 10 with a wider release beginning on April 17. I usually don’t recommend documentaries, but you have to check this one out. It’s been getting rave reviews from critics since last year’s Sundance Film Festival, so go out there and check out this one (and don’t forget my review for the full scoop on the show).
Trailer below… (Warning! It may make you want to see the movie!)
